UPCOMING HAMMER & TONGUE EVENTS IN BRIGHTON

Hammer and Tongue Grand Final 2006.

Monday November 6th

Featuring:

Bambi - cheeky, funny poetry from a woman not afraid to speak the unspeakable and mention the unmentionables.

Chris P - Like a modern day Philip Larkin with more humour and bigger sideburns, the polymath poet has already established a cult following in Brighton for his quirky poetry and unique performance.

Daniel Rivera - October's winner, who blew the crowd away with an amazing performance. Brummie-accented poetry from a new, young Brighton talent.

Dizraeli - frontman in leading Brighton live dub-hiphop band Bad Science and master performer of complex poetic narratives, told with a visionary optimism even amidst the cynicism and despair of the urban life he describes.

Erica - Stunning performer, with a new vision on life and how we live it.

Robin - Dry, deliberately underplayed, self-deprecating humour from the grumpy old gent of the Brighton poetry scene.

Spliff Richard - Hiphop poet and advocate of the benevolent green stuff, righteous proselyte for the good life.

+ ONE wildcard entry, chosen by votes sent to angrysam@indystart.com from any of the artists who have completed in the last 8 slams.

Mark Gwynne Jones

All the winners of this season's slam, battling it out for the top prize.

In between the three rounds of the Slam there will also be a performance from Mark Gwynne Jones and The Psychicbread as part of their UK tour.

After Mark supported John Cooper Clarke, the Manchester legend was heard to complain that 'I always stipulate that who ever is on with me hasn't got to be any good - this one got past me - I don't know how, but heads will roll.'

The Bard of Derbyshire will be performing with his band of percussion, piano, kora and flute in his own crowd-stunning style.

THE THIRD ANNUAL BRIGHTON
POETS vs MCs BATTLE
with a performance from PHENZWAAN

      7.30 pm 'til late
      Monday 12th June
      at THE KOMEDIA
      £4/£3 cons.

2 teams - each consisting of 6 artists - engage in verbal warfare to defend that which they hold dear. Will POETRY triumph over HIP-HOP, or will the MCs have the last word?

Brighton's Hammer & Tongue compere and organiser ANGRY SAM will captain a team of Brighton's boldest and freshest performance poets. Pitted against them are a team of Brighton's best quick-witted, fast-of-tongue and foul-mouthed MCs, led by local lyrical giant ELEMENTAL.

The night will be hosted by VIRGO and features a special guest performance from PHENZWAAN. This unique event promises to be raucous and irreverent; a delight for all word lovers of all kinds; and a show case of some of Brighton's finest verbalists.

PHENZWAAN is not your typical poet. He has solidified himself as an artist throughout the years, having released 8 cd's independently and selling over 20,000 all without the help of national distribution. He is a man on a mission - a mission to bring his spoken words to a level of art that often times seems to be lacking in the genre today. Now, with Solidified, PHENZWAAN has captured all on one album, in a way like never heard before, the best from his previous releases, new material and not to mention a host of superbly crafted remixes. In doing so, he has created an experience both lyrically and musically that clearly defines him as an artist going from strength to strength. These are strongly inspiring, engaging, direct and informative works of art that cannot and will not be mistaken for simple poems. PHENZWAAN writes straight from the heart, uncensored and creatively unafraid spoken word. His work is sure to stir the hearts and minds of all who open themselves to it.
